The Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), Federal High Court Chapter, has commenced an indefinite strike following the expiration of a 21-day ultimatum issued to the federal government. The strike is in response to the government’s failure to implement the new minimum wage, 25% and 35% salary increases, and a wage award.
Comrade Samuel Ikpatt, Chairman of JUSUN’s Federal High Court Chapter, revealed in a statement issued on Thursday that all federal courts are impacted since employees have not been paid under the new salary structure. SaharaReporters discovered that workers are being owed money in all federal courts, including the Supreme Court, Federal High Court, Appeal Court, and National Industrial Court.
The union had already ordered its members to get ready for industrial action if the government did not meet their demands before the ultimatum ended on January 23, 2025, according to the statement, which SaharaReporters was able to obtain.
Comrade Ikpatt pointed out that if immediate action is made to meet the financial commitments to union members, the strike may still be avoided. “The above resolved is as a result of inaction on the non-implementation of the new minimum wage, 25% & 35% of salary increase and the We Award.”
The statement said, “In response to the attached circular from our union National Secretariat, write to notify the Management that we shall be proceeding on an indefinite strike action after the expiration of twenty-one (21) days this notice commencing from Thursday, the 23rd of January, 2025.” Samuel said, “Please take note that if immediate action is done to secure payment to our members before the expiration of the notice, the imminent strike could be avoided.”
