Governor Adeleke Travels to U.S. for Davido’s Wedding Amid Political Criticism in Osun

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has travelled to the United States to attend the upcoming wedding ceremony of his nephew, internationally acclaimed music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido. The white wedding between Davido and his longtime partner, Chioma Rowland, is scheduled to take place in Miami, Florida, this August, drawing global attention from entertainment enthusiasts and political observers alike.
The governor’s journey, however, has sparked controversy in Osun State, as opposition parties question the circumstances surrounding his absence from office and the manner of his departure.

APC Queries Governor’s Trip and Power Transfer Process
The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) raised concerns over Governor Adeleke’s travel arrangements, alleging that he left the country without informing the public or formally handing over power to his deputy, Prince Kola Adewusi.
In a statement released on Monday, the APC criticised what it described as a “lack of transparency” in governance and demanded clarity on who is officially in charge of state affairs while the governor is away.
“The people of Osun deserve to know when their governor is travelling, where he is going, and who is legally empowered to act in his absence. This level of secrecy does not promote accountability,” the party stated.
Governor’s Aide Defends Trip as Strictly Personal
Responding to the criticisms, Olawale Rasheed, spokesperson for Governor Adeleke, confirmed that the governor left Nigeria “a few days ago” aboard the family’s private jet and stressed that the trip was for strictly family reasons, not an official assignment.
“Governor Adeleke left Nigeria for the United States via the family’s private jet a few days ago for the wedding of the global music icon, his beloved nephew, David Adeleke,” Rasheed said in a press release.
He further explained that Adeleke had not taken any official vacation since assuming office in November 2022, making the trip his first extended leave for personal matters.
“While away, the governor is in regular communication with his deputy, who is competently handling the affairs of the state. There is no leadership vacuum in Osun,” Rasheed assured.
Adeleke Invites Opposition to Celebrate Davido’s Wedding
Interestingly, the statement from the governor’s media office also extended an olive branch to political rivals, inviting members of the opposition to attend the wedding celebration or join virtually if they could not travel.
“His Excellency is extending an invitation to the opposition party to attend the event and share in the joy of the occasion with the Adeleke family. Those unable to attend may join virtually,” Rasheed added.
The gesture, while unusual in the political arena, has been interpreted by some analysts as an attempt to diffuse tension and project a message of unity during what is considered a major family milestone.
Political Implications and Public Reactions
Governor Adeleke’s trip highlights the delicate balance between personal commitments and official responsibilities for public office holders. While his absence is within his rights, political opponents argue that state protocols regarding power transfer should have been more publicly communicated.
In Osogbo, reactions have been mixed. Some residents expressed support for the governor, emphasising that attending a family wedding should not be politicised. Others criticised what they termed a lack of clear governance procedure.
A civil servant, Kunle Akinwale, remarked, “Nobody is against the governor attending his nephew’s wedding. The issue is about transparency. People want to be sure that the deputy governor is officially in charge.”
Davide’s Wedding: A Global Spotlight
Davido and Chioma’s wedding has been one of the most talked-about events in Nigeria’s entertainment industry this year, with top celebrities, politicians, and business moguls expected to attend. Miami, known for its luxurious beaches and vibrant nightlife, is set to host the glamorous ceremony, which is expected to feature high-profile performances and star-studded guest lists.
For the Adeleke family, the wedding marks not just a celebration of love but also a symbolic union that brings together their influence in both entertainment and politics.
As Governor Adeleke celebrates this family event abroad, Osun residents will be watching closely to ensure governance continues seamlessly in his absence. The outcome of this political discourse may shape future expectations on how public officials manage personal obligations alongside state duties.
With the wedding date fast approaching, attention is firmly fixed on Miami, where Davido and Chioma are set to officially tie the knot in a ceremony expected to make headlines worldwide.
