Governor Fubara Refutes Tinubu’s Allegations Amid Rivers State Crisis

Fubara Denies Neglecting Assembly Reconstruction and Security Concerns

Suspended Rivers State Governor, Sim Fubara, has strongly dismissed allegations made against him by President Bola Tinubu, following the declaration of a state of emergency in the state. Fubara, his deputy, and members of the Rivers House of Assembly were suspended for six months, with a sole administrator appointed to oversee the state’s affairs.

President Tinubu, during a nationwide broadcast, accused Fubara of failing to rebuild the demolished state House of Assembly complex and not addressing security threats from militants targeting oil installations. However, Fubara, in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, on Thursday, refuted these claims, labeling them as misleading and a result of misinformation.

Governor Defends Assembly Reconstruction Efforts

One of the key accusations made by President Tinubu was that Fubara had failed to reconstruct the Rivers State House of Assembly complex since its demolition on December 13, 2023. The President stated that the building had remained abandoned for over 14 months.

In response, Fubara clarified that the reconstruction project was already at an advanced stage, with the new complex reportedly 80% completed. He expressed disappointment that the Presidency had been misinformed regarding the status of the project, stating that such false narratives were misleading the public.

“Ordinarily, we would have ignored the statements as mere results of lack of adequate information to the Presidency by those tasked with the responsibility of providing same to guide decision-making,” Fubara’s statement read. “However, it has become imperative to set the records straight and correct the erroneous impression such narratives are creating in the minds of the Nigerian people.

Denies Allegations of Neglecting Oil Facility Security

Fubara also rejected claims that his administration failed to prevent threats from militants targeting oil installations. He insisted that his government had consistently prioritized peace and security, urging residents and stakeholders to avoid any actions that could destabilize the state or sabotage the economy.

The Governor attributed the recent threats against oil pipelines to comments made by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike. According to Fubara, Wike’s remarks during a live media chat, where he described the Ijaws as a “minority of the minorities” and dismissed their influence, had angered various Niger Delta groups, including elders, chiefs, women, and militant factions.

“Most of the Ijaw groups and leaders even demanded an apology from the FCT Minister, which he rebuffed,” Fubara stated. He emphasized that his administration had nothing to do with the threats and had actively worked to maintain stability in the region.

Fubara Highlights His Commitment to Security

To further counter the accusations, Fubara pointed to his role in safeguarding oil infrastructure. He referenced his participation in the Presidential Committee on the Protection of Oil Installations, which underscored his commitment to national security.

He also noted that at several public engagements, including the recent commissioning of projects and the handover of an AW139 helicopter to the Nigerian Air Force between March 3 and 13, 2025, he had repeatedly stressed the need to protect oil pipelines.

“Available public records show that Governor Fubara, on several occasions and at every forum, made it clear that his administration was committed to the peace, security, and safety of oil facilities in the state,” the statement read.

Political Tensions Continue in Rivers State

The ongoing crisis in Rivers State has been marked by a power struggle between Fubara and Wike, his predecessor and key political rival. The intervention by President Tinubu, leading to the suspension of the governor and key state officials, has further heightened tensions.

Despite the current political turmoil, Fubara reaffirmed his commitment to governance and the well-being of the state. He urged the people of Rivers to remain calm and not be swayed by misinformation.

As the situation unfolds, political observers continue to monitor developments, particularly regarding the role of the newly appointed sole administrator and how the federal government plans to navigate the crisis.
