Nasarawa Governor Dismisses Rumors of Buhari’s Exit from APC Ahead of 2027 Elections

As Nigeria gears up for the 2027 general elections, Nasarawa Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has cautioned opposition political parties against any attempt to court former President Muhammadu Buhari into their ranks. Sule insisted that Buhari and the Congress for Progressives Change (CPC) bloc will remain firmly within the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing the enduring loyalty of the former president and the legacy of achievements credited to the ruling party under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The governor made this declaration in Lafia, the state capital, on Friday during a grand reception organized in honor of the newly appointed Secretary to the Nasarawa State Government (SSG), Labaran Magaji. The event drew dignitaries from across the political, legal, and traditional spheres.

“Buhari Is CPC, and CPC Is APC,” Says Governor Sule
Amid swirling speculations that some political actors are trying to revive the defunct CPC and align with disenchanted figures like former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to challenge the APC’s grip on power, Governor Sule unequivocally stated that such aspirations are misplaced.
“There is nothing like taking CPC away,” Sule declared. “There is only one person in this world that can decide for the CPC, and that is our father, Muhammadu Buhari. He is the CPC himself.”
Sule emphasized Buhari’s enduring political clout, pointing out that the former president has consistently carried a loyal base of 12 million voters, a political asset he has never swayed from the APC. He noted that a recent visit to Buhari in Kaduna further reinforced their shared commitment to the party’s unity and future.
“We told him, ‘Baba, you are not going anywhere. We are going to be in this house (APC) together so that we will continue to build our house,’” he added.
Grand Reception Highlights Governance and Unity in Nasarawa
The occasion also served as a platform to celebrate and reaffirm the competence and dedication of the new SSG, Labaran Magaji. The event, hosted by the chairmen of the 13 local government areas of the state, was attended by political stakeholders, legal experts, women and youth groups, and religious and traditional leaders—underscoring the administration’s inclusive approach to governance.
Governor Sule lauded Magaji, who previously served as Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Nasarawa, for his integrity and commitment. He charged him to remain steadfast in his duties and praised the local government chairmen and well-wishers for organizing the event.
“This gathering will greatly help in complementing the efforts of our administration to promote peace and unity among the diverse ethnic groups in Nasarawa,” Sule stated.
Magaji Receives Praise for Legal Reforms and Public Service
Former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, who chaired the occasion, commended Magaji for his notable service during his tenure in the state judiciary. Malami highlighted Magaji’s introduction of justice reforms that accelerated case resolutions and promoted alternative sentencing, leading to the decongestion of correctional facilities.
“He brought justice closer to the people, especially the underprivileged in rural areas. Labaran is indeed a leader for a new era. This appointment is a testament to his outstanding credentials,” Malami said.
Echoing similar sentiments, Safiyanu Andaha, the state chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), described Magaji as a well-rounded leader with proven experience in governance at both state and national levels.
“We commend His Excellency, Governor Sule, for appointing such a capable individual. This reception is our show of solidarity with a man who has consistently prioritized the people’s interest,” Andaha noted.
Magaji Promises Dedication and Service
In his remarks, Labaran Magaji expressed deep appreciation for the overwhelming show of support. He assured attendees of his dedication to duty and commitment to supporting the administration’s goals of inclusive development and justice for all.
“I will remain diligent and committed in the discharge of my responsibilities,” he said.
As political tensions simmer in the lead-up to 2027, Governor Sule’s remarks serve as a strong reaffirmation of party unity and a clear signal to opposition elements that Buhari’s loyalty—and that of the CPC bloc—is not up for grabs.
