The Police Service Commission (PSC) has confirmed that a significant number of officers within the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) are expected to resign following the outcome of a recently concluded disciplinary panel. Reports indicate that approximately 340 officers, many of whom are senior-level personnel, face retirement after exceeding the mandatory retirement age of 60 or after completing 35 years of service.

Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, initiated the disciplinary panel to investigate the continued service of the affected officers, whose tenure was in violation of established regulations. The officers in question have begun the process of retiring prior to the submission of the panel’s report.

The situation specifically affects officers who were due to retire between 2022 and 2024. In a statement issued on Monday, February 17, police spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi urged inquiries on the matter to be directed to the PSC.

Ikechukwu Ani, spokesperson for the PSC, confirmed the reports but noted that he was not privy to the exact number of officers involved. “Yes, I know some of them are going on retirement, but I don’t know the actual number,” Ani stated.

In a prior meeting held in Abuja, the PSC had approved the immediate retirement of officers over 60 years old or those who have served for 35 years. This decision was initially documented in a statement issued on January 31, following a plenary meeting in September 2017, where it was agreed that the dates of appointment for recruits and other NPF officers should be accurately reflected in their official records.

This development marks a significant shift in the management of personnel within the Nigeria Police Force, as the PSC seeks to enforce compliance with the retirement policy and maintain an efficient workforce.
