The action was taken in the midst of a protracted internal crisis within the party, which has been beset by factional conflicts and leadership issues.

Labour Party Is Dead – Presidency

The NLC, under the leadership of its President Joe Ajaero, instructed the National Administrative Council (NAC) to act immediately to rebuild the party in a statement issued following its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Yola, Adamawa State. Ahead of the general elections in 2027, the NLC also made room for potential alliances or mergers with other political parties that share similar views.

Concerns that the Labour Party has strayed from its founding mission of upholding the rights of Nigerian workers and the oppressed masses led to the decision to rebrand the party. The NLC claims that there is a rift between the party and the labor movement because Julius Abure, the party’s current leader, does not represent the interests of workers.

According to the communiqué, “NEC-in-session directed the National Administrative Council (NAC) to take immediate steps, which may include rebranding, merger, or forming of coalitions to defend the interests of NLC and Nigerian workers in the party with a view to reclaiming the party and returning it to its original ideological roots after carefully examining the unfortunate events in the Labour Party, which was a creation of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and the opaqueness that pervades its activities,” the statement read.

“The Congress will not permit reactionary forces that do not reflect the goals of the working class and the Nigerian people at large to seize control of the Labour Party.”

“The NLC is still dedicated to making sure the party continues to be a genuine means of emancipating Nigerian laborers and the downtrodden masses.”
