The Ogun State Government has announced the cancellation of the ongoing selection process for the Awujale of Ijebuland, citing procedural irregularities and the need to strictly adhere to established traditional and legal frameworks.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the state government said the decision followed consultations with relevant stakeholders and a review of the steps taken so far in the selection exercise. According to the government, the process did not fully comply with the extant chieftaincy laws and customary requirements guiding the emergence of the Awujale.

The government stressed that respect for due process and the sanctity of Ijebu traditional institutions informed its action, adding that any process capable of undermining peace and unity in Ijebuland would not be allowed to stand.
“The selection process has been halted to allow for proper alignment with the Ogun State Chieftaincy Laws and the age-long traditions of Ijebuland,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, residents across parts of Ijebuland have been circulating rumours that both the Ogun State Government and the Federal Government are exploring ways to bring in Fuji music icon, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (K1 De Ultimate), into the Awujale succession conversation. As of the time of filing this report, neither the state government nor the Federal Government has confirmed or denied the claims.
The Ogun State Government assured the people of Ijebuland that a fresh and transparent process would be initiated at the appropriate time, in consultation with the Ijebu kingmakers and other relevant bodies, to ensure the emergence of a widely accepted Awujale.
Residents were urged to remain calm and avoid actions that could heighten tension, as the government reaffirmed its commitment to preserving peace, tradition, and the rule of law across the state.
