Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Lagos Endorses President Bola Tinubu for Second Term, Calls for Unity Among Nigerians

The Lagos chapter of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a prominent socio-cultural organization representing the Igbo community, has declared its full support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027. The endorsement came during a reconciliation parley organized to foster unity between Yoruba and Igbo residents in Lagos State following tensions that arose from recent demolitions and the aftermath of the 2023 general elections. The meeting, convened by Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, who serves as the Lead Visioner of the Lagos4Lagos Movement, brought together leaders of various ethnic groups, business associations, and community stakeholders to discuss lasting peace and cooperation within the state. Speaking at the event, the President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Lagos, Chief Sunday Udeh, lauded President Tinubu’s leadership qualities, describing him as a visionary and experienced statesman who understands the intricacies of governance and national administration. Udeh emphasized that Tinubu’s experience and track record of inclusive governance while serving as Governor of Lagos State remain major reasons the Igbo community believes he deserves a second term in office. He stated that the Igbo community in Lagos has enjoyed relative stability and participation under Tinubu’s leadership and is committed to sustaining that relationship. “We are not in doubt of his victory in 2027. We know our party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), will win again,” Udeh said confidently. He reiterated that Tinubu’s performance since assuming office in 2023 has demonstrated his capacity to lead Nigeria through challenging times, particularly amid economic reforms and restructuring efforts aimed at stabilizing the country.
The Ohanaeze leader used the occasion to appeal to both Yoruba and Igbo residents to embrace peace and mutual respect, warning against divisive sentiments that could disrupt the long-standing relationship between the two ethnic groups. Udeh noted that the recent demolitions and political tensions had strained interactions between the Lagos State Government and the Igbo community but assured that renewed dialogue would pave the way for reconciliation and stronger cooperation. “Our message is clear: unity, peace, and understanding are the keys to progress. Lagos is home to all of us, and we must continue to coexist in harmony,” he stressed. Udeh also called on the Lagos State Government to ensure more inclusive governance by engaging directly with various ethnic associations, including the Igbo community, to promote participation in decision-making and developmental programs. He expressed optimism that consistent dialogue between the state government and ethnic communities would help bridge communication gaps and prevent future misunderstandings. “2027 is close. We know our party will take it. I am a member and will work for the party,” Udeh added, reaffirming his personal commitment to President Tinubu’s political vision and the All Progressives Congress.
Also present at the event was the National President of the Market Leaders Association of Nigeria (TMLAN), Chief Charles Obih, who pledged the full support of the Igbo business community for Tinubu’s re-election campaign. Obih commended the President for his pragmatic approach to governance, particularly in managing Nigeria’s complex economic environment. He highlighted Tinubu’s efforts to stabilize the naira, attract foreign investment, and reform the public sector as evidence of his dedication to national development. “We will mobilize our members to ensure President Tinubu’s re-election is smooth and successful by the grace of God,” Obih declared. He added that the Igbo business community in Lagos, known for its entrepreneurial resilience, will play a significant role in mobilizing votes and resources to support Tinubu’s second-term campaign.
Jandor, in his address, praised the efforts of both Yoruba and Igbo leaders for coming together to rebuild trust and strengthen coexistence after the divisive political season. He emphasized that Lagos, as Nigeria’s commercial hub, thrives only when its diverse population works together toward common goals. According to him, “Lagos belongs to all Nigerians, regardless of tribe or background. What we are doing today is not just politics—it is about securing peace and prosperity for future generations.”
Political observers note that Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s endorsement of President Tinubu represents a significant development, considering that the Igbo community has often been perceived as politically distant from mainstream power structures in Lagos. Analysts believe the move could help ease inter-ethnic tensions and foster stronger cooperation between the government and the business community, especially as the nation prepares for another general election in 2027.
However, while many welcomed the endorsement as a sign of reconciliation and political maturity, some have urged both the federal and state governments to match their words with action by addressing issues affecting residents, such as housing demolitions, multiple taxation, and economic hardship.
Despite these challenges, the atmosphere at the reconciliation meeting was largely positive, with community leaders agreeing to continue regular consultations to maintain peace. The gathering ended with a joint declaration affirming the commitment of Yoruba and Igbo communities to peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and collaboration for the progress of Lagos State and Nigeria as a whole.
Chief Udeh concluded by reaffirming Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s loyalty to the Nigerian state and confidence in President Tinubu’s leadership. “We believe in a united Nigeria under a fair and just leadership. President Tinubu has shown he is capable, and we stand with him as he continues his work to rebuild the nation,” he said. The endorsement by the influential Igbo community in Lagos marks a major boost for President Tinubu’s re-election prospects and signals a renewed effort to strengthen inter-ethnic relations ahead of the next political cycle.
