The Okere of Sakiland, Oba Khalid Oyedepo, has called on Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, to urgently move against illegal mining activities across the state, warning that the practice poses serious security, environmental and economic threats.
The monarch made the appeal while speaking at the Okere Palace in Saki, where he cited the recent violent attack in Kiama, Kwara State, as a stark reminder of the dangers of poor regulation of rural activities.
According to Oba Oyedepo, unchecked illegal mining could serve as a magnet for criminal elements and fuel instability in border communities if decisive action is not taken.
He urged the Oyo State Government to strengthen enforcement mechanisms, deepen collaboration with security agencies and actively involve traditional institutions in intelligence gathering and community monitoring to forestall a similar crisis in the state.
The royal father also cautioned some community heads in Saki over alleged involvement in illegal activities, revealing that the palace had received credible reports implicating them.
He stressed that the traditional institution would not protect any title holder found culpable, reaffirming his commitment to accountability and integrity in Sakiland.
The occasion also witnessed the presentation of brand-new vehicles to three senior chiefs, High Chief Basapa, High Chief Iba Apefin and High Chief Lasingbon, in recognition of their service.
Oba Oyedepo said the gesture was aimed at strengthening traditional administration by improving the mobility and efficiency of palace officials, reflecting a leadership stance that combines firm action against illegality with support for dedicated service.
