Ahead of the August 8, 2026 governorship election in Osun State, a former two-term Commissioner for Finance, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, has emerged as the flagbearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) following the party’s governorship primary held on Saturday in Osogbo, the state capital.
Oyebamiji’s emergence was through a consensus arrangement, after all other aspirants in the race agreed to step down in his favour, in line with the decision of the APC National Working Committee (NWC).
APC Moves To Reclaim Osun After Adeleke’s Defection From PDP
Announcing the development, a former governorship aspirant, Kunle Rasheed Adegoke, said the affirmation of Oyebamiji followed wide consultations and unanimous agreement among party stakeholders.
According to him, all other aspirants voluntarily withdrew from the contest to allow Oyebamiji emerge as the party’s sole candidate.
He said,
“I, Kunle Rasheed Adegoke, with the consent of all other aspirants, hereby move the motion that Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji be adopted as the consensus candidate of the All Progressives Congress to contest the 2026 Osun State governorship election. I so move.”
The motion was seconded by Senator Babajide Omoworare, after which the 1,660 accredited delegates present at the primary election unanimously voted for Oyebamiji.
Other governorship aspirants who were present at the primary include former Deputy Governor Benedict Alabi, Prince Dotun Babayemi, Akin Ogunbiyi, Mulikat Abiola-Jimoh, and Oralusi.
The Chairman of the Osun APC Governorship Primary Election Committee and Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, subsequently announced Oyebamiji as the winner of the primary and the party’s official governorship candidate for the 2026 election.
In his acceptance speech, Oyebamiji thanked party leaders, aspirants, and delegates for the confidence reposed in him and called for unity ahead of the general election.
He urged all members of the party to work together to ensure victory at the polls, describing the task ahead as a collective responsibility.
Oyebamiji also called for a one-minute silenceof silence** in honour of the late immediate past APC Chairman in Osun State, Prince Gboyega Famodun, as well as Hon. Abass, a former local government chairman who was reportedly murdered during the local government leadership tussle in the state.
He pledged to run an inclusive campaign and work towards reclaiming Osun State for the APC in 2026.
