PDP South-West Zonal Leaders Vow to Expand Governorship Wins

In a renewed push for political dominance, the newly elected South-West zonal executive of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has pledged to secure more governorship positions for the party in the region before the end of their tenure. This assurance was delivered by the re-elected Zonal Chairman, Kamorudeen Ajisafe, during his acceptance speech following a peaceful congress held at Theophilus Ogunlesi Hall, Ibadan, Oyo State.
Currently, the PDP governs only two out of the six South-West states—Oyo and Osun. The remaining four—Lagos, Ogun, Ekiti, and Ondo—are under the control of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Ajisafe expressed confidence that the tide would turn in favor of the PDP under his leadership.

Ajisafe Promises Growth and Unity in the South-West
Ajisafe, speaking on behalf of the new executive team, vowed to uphold the values and direction set by party leaders in the region. He noted, “I promise to move the party forward, and I assure you that more South-West states will produce governors on the platform of the PDP before the expiration of our tenure in office.”
He further emphasized a commitment to meritorious service and unity within the zone, a statement that resonated with delegates who gathered from across the region for the well-attended election. His re-election was part of a broader consensus among party leaders to present a united front ahead of upcoming political contests.
The newly constituted zonal executive also includes Muyiwa Obagunwa (Secretary), Bose Adedibu (Woman Leader), Adeyemo Adetunji (Treasurer), Yaya Adeleke (Financial Secretary), Atofarati Olusanya (Publicity Secretary), and Bamidele Seyi Abiola (Youth Leader), among others.
The election process was observed by representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and lauded for its transparency and organization.
Congress Marks a New Chapter of Unity
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and his Osun counterpart, Governor Ademola Adeleke, were prominent figures at the congress. Both leaders hailed the event as a milestone in fostering intra-party cohesion. Makinde, in his remarks, reflected on the past challenges that fractured the party in the region, expressing satisfaction that the PDP is now unified.
“Four years ago, we were at daggers drawn but today, we are one united PDP family,” Makinde said. “This congress is for us to show the way democracy is supposed to be practised in Nigeria. The South-West is leading the way.”
Governor Adeleke and PDP stalwart Bode George echoed similar sentiments, stating that the congress would send a strong signal of unity from the South-West zone. George, who announced that it would be his final political outing, praised the spirit of harmony and described Makinde as a “great mobiliser.”
Also in attendance was Alhaji Taofeek Arapaja, Deputy National Chairman (South) of the PDP, and Ladi Adebutu, the party’s 2023 governorship candidate in Ogun State. Former Akwa Ibom Governor Udom Emmanuel, who chaired the electoral committee, applauded the decorum and discipline shown by delegates throughout the congress.
With a renewed leadership structure and a message of unity, the South-West PDP appears poised to intensify its political strategies in a bid to reclaim more states from the ruling APC.
