Members of the House of Representatives are reportedly facing mounting pressure from various political interests and stakeholders to reconsider provisions mandating the compulsory electronic transmission of election results in the ongoing harmonisation of the Electoral Act. The debate comes amid efforts by the National Assembly to review and align sections of the law ahead of future elections.

Sources within the legislative process indicate that while some lawmakers argue that electronic transmission enhances transparency, credibility, and public trust in elections, others have raised concerns about infrastructure gaps, network challenges in rural communities, and the financial implications of making the system mandatory nationwide. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has consistently maintained that technology plays a critical role in strengthening electoral integrity.

Civil society organisations and pro-democracy groups have also weighed in, urging lawmakers to retain compulsory e-transmission, describing it as a major safeguard against manipulation of results. They argue that removing the requirement could reverse gains recorded in recent electoral reforms and weaken confidence in the democratic process.

As consultations continue, political observers say the final decision by the National Assembly will significantly shape Nigeria’s electoral framework and public perception of the country’s commitment to transparent and credible elections.
