In the wake of several high-profile defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State, former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has downplayed the political turbulence, asserting that the party remains firm and poised for rejuvenation.

In a statement posted on Thursday, April 24, 2025, via his 𝕏 handle and titled “There is No Cause for Alarm, We’ll Reposition PDP,” Saraki addressed mounting concerns among party loyalists and pro-democracy youth groups. He noted that while the recent wave of defections might appear concerning on the surface, it signals not decline, but rebirth for the embattled opposition.

Party Under Pressure, But Focus Must Remain on Rebuilding — Says Saraki

Saraki expressed that he had received a flurry of calls from concerned party members, anxious about the implications of the Delta exodus, including the high-profile defection of the former running mate to PDP’s presidential candidate, Ifeanyi Okowa. Nonetheless, he remained steadfast in his belief that such events, though disappointing, present an opportunity for introspection and strategic revival.

According to the former Kwara State governor, those who no longer believe in the PDP’s mission should be allowed to leave. He emphasized the importance of consolidating around loyal and committed individuals rather than clinging to a swollen base of double-faced members. “We are better off with a few faithful hands than many disloyal ones,” he stressed.

Saraki’s remarks also highlighted a broader concern for Nigeria’s democratic health. He warned that the defections might play into a dangerous trajectory toward a one-party state—a scenario he described as risky for Nigeria’s deeply diverse and pluralistic society.

“A one-party system, as some are trying to craft behind the scenes, is not only unhealthy but dangerous. We cannot afford to eliminate alternatives. Democracy thrives on competition, and citizens must always have credible options,” Saraki said.

In a rare show of candor, Saraki discouraged scapegoating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the PDP’s internal problems. Instead, he called on party members to shoulder the responsibility of strengthening the party and holding the government accountable.

Referencing the controversial defection of Okowa, Saraki described the move as “unprecedented” and “a symbol of how deeply leadership values have eroded.” He criticized any attempts to justify the act as pressure-induced, branding such narratives as further signs of systemic decay in the country’s political ethics.

Despite the challenges, Saraki maintained that the PDP remains in a strong position to bounce back. Even with a reduced number of governors under its banner, he insisted that the opposition party still possesses the capacity to make significant electoral strides in the near future.

“Let us not be discouraged,” he urged. “What we need now is unity, discipline, and vision. The future is bright for PDP if we harness this moment as a catalyst for transformation.”

As the PDP navigates this rough patch, Saraki’s message is one of resolve over resignation, pressing for a committed base that will lead the party into a new era of credible opposition and responsible governance.
