The tariff in the telecommunications sector would be evaluated on a regular basis, according to Mr. Wale Edun, Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy.
During yesterday’s 2025 World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, Edun gave an interview to Arise TV.
Remember how the Nigerian Communications Commission, or NCC, gave carriers permission to raise their rates by 50% on Monday?

The Nigeria Labour Congress, or NLC, criticized the federal government for authorizing the rise, among other objections to the move.

NLC called the decision a “clear assault” on the wellbeing of Nigerian workers and urged Nigerians to get ready for a potential statewide boycott of telecommunications services.

The minister added that the tariff change was necessary to keep the industry afloat in the face of inflation and growing operating costs. He claims that the regular assessment would guarantee that the tariff stays equitable and balanced for both operators and customers.
In keeping with the price hike, he also asked telecom providers to improve service delivery.
“Inflation and growing expenses have occurred, and the telecoms must reflect that,” he stated. The high cost of living must be taken into consideration.

The 50% tariff adjustment, in my opinion, is a good place to start. Compromise, timing, and sequencing these essential adjustments are key.

“We want telcos operating efficiently, terminating calls seamlessly, and delivering high-quality services. At the same time, we want them to foster innovation, create jobs, and contribute to GDP.
“The 50 percent tariff is a situation that will be looked at on a forward-looking basis. As we go forward there will continue to be review, consultations and discussions in this area.”

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering a thriving telecommunications sector that supports innovation, economic growth, and job creation.

According to him, the goal of the government is to improve the economy and attract investments across sectors.
