Tensions Rise as Osun State Police Command Intensify Security Amid PDP-APC Council Control Dispute

Police CommandIn response to escalating political tensions, the Osun State Police Command on Monday deployed security forces across all 30 local government areas and area councils in the state. This proactive move was aimed at preventing a potential clash between supporters of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) over control of the councils.

The deployment follows last Friday’s Court of Appeal ruling on the lingering controversy regarding legitimate leadership in the state’s local governments. The judgment has rekindled rival claims by both parties, prompting fears of unrest in several council areas.

Police Bolster Presence to Maintain Order Amid Osun Political Unrest

Reports indicate that security personnel, including mobile and conventional police officers, as well as operatives from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, were strategically stationed at volatile locations such as Olorunda, Osogbo, Egbedore, Boluwaduro, and Ila.

A police officer, speaking anonymously, confirmed that the early presence of security forces deterred would-be agitators. “We were dispatched to this place to maintain peace and orderliness. Some hoodlums showed up early, but fled immediately upon seeing our presence,” the officer revealed.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Zachariah Abiodun Ojelabi, stressed that the police remain apolitical. “Our duty is to provide security to ensure there is no breakdown of law and order. We are not into politics; we are here solely to ensure safety,” he said, urging residents to carry on with their daily activities.

Meanwhile, the ongoing rift between the two major political parties has deepened, with each laying claim to the rightful control of the councils.

ALGON Chairmen of PDP and APC Exchange Barbs Over Legitimacy

Sarafadeen Awotunde, PDP’s ALGON Chairman in Osun, maintained that their focus remains on peace and the developmental agenda of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration. He played down the need for immediate resumption at council offices, instead praising the current state leadership for its performance.

“The Court of Appeal that gave the judgment knows the next steps to eject impostors. This is not a PDP-APC issue; it’s the APC versus the people of Osun State,” he argued, affirming their respect for the rule of law.

In contrast, Abiodun Idowu, the APC’s ALGON Chairman, asserted the legality of their position and presence in the councils. “The keys to the councils are with us. We have an enrollment order confirming our legitimacy. Let the PDP show theirs,” he challenged.

Idowu also credited the presence of law enforcement to their legal right to occupy the council offices, stating, “No fear; we are in control. Osun residents should go about their normal businesses.”

As the political impasse continues, the heightened police presence serves as a crucial buffer, preventing immediate violence while the legal and political processes unfold.
