Tinubu Orders Withdrawal Of Police Officers From VIP Security, Directs Redeployment To Core Duties
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the immediate withdrawal of police officers attached to Very Important Persons (VIPs) across the country, ordering their redeployment to core policing responsibilities amid rising security challenges.
This is contained in a statement by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The directive, issued during a high-level security meeting held on Sunday in Abuja, mandates that police personnel currently assigned to VIP protection be reassigned to strengthen security presence in communities, particularly in remote areas where police numbers remain critically low.
According to the President, VIPs requiring security escorts going forward will obtain such services from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), whose operatives will provide armed protection on request.
The decision comes amid growing concerns over the shortage of police personnel in many parts of the country, a situation the President described as detrimental to the safety and defence of citizens.
To further address manpower gaps within the police force, President Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 30,000 additional officers.
The Federal Government is also working with state governments to upgrade and expand police training facilities nationwide.
Sunday’s security meeting was attended by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Waidi Shaibu; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke; Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; and Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Tosin Adeola Ajayi.
