UK-Based Gospel Singer Muyiwa Olarewaju Recounts Shocking Experience as Robbery Victim Turned Suspect
UK-based Nigerian gospel singer and broadcaster, Muyiwa Olarewaju, has shared a troubling account of how he went from being a robbery victim to a criminal suspect, in a case that left him emotionally shaken and legally entangled for three months.
The incident, which occurred in February 2025, took place in the early hours of the morning as Olarewaju was driving to work. According to a video posted on his Twitter (X) account, the singer recounted how a young white man attempted to break into his vehicle and smashed one of the windows. The attempted robbery took place at approximately 5:30 a.m., a time when the streets were relatively quiet.

Despite the trauma, Olarewaju managed to safely reach his workplace and did what any responsible citizen would — he contacted the police and reported the crime. He even went a step further by directing authorities to surveillance cameras in the area, confident that the footage would help identify and apprehend the suspect.
“I told the police where the cameras were in that area, the fact that the guy had smashed up my window, and the worrying and all that it caused,” he stated in the video.
However, what should have been a straightforward investigation quickly took a disturbing turn. To his surprise and confusion, the police turned their attention to him, beginning a probe in which Olarewaju himself became the suspect.
“Immediately after the police got in touch with me, the next thing was they now began an investigation where I was now the suspect. Yes, I was now the suspect,” he said.
According to the singer, he was called in for multiple police interviews and found himself needing legal protection. He expressed deep gratitude to Hanson Woods Solicitors, a legal firm he credited with helping him navigate the ordeal.
“They called me in for interviews, etc., etc., and I had to get a lawyer. Thank God for family in Hanson Woods. I highly recommend solicitors Hanson Woods — they were absolutely phenomenal,” he said.
The police, despite being provided with surveillance footage that allegedly showed the assailant, failed to locate or identify the man who attacked Olarewaju’s car. In a bizarre twist, Olarewaju was instead investigated on suspicion of affray, a legal term typically used in reference to public fighting or threats of violence in public spaces.
“The police never found the young man who they saw on camera. But I was being investigated for affray,” he said.
For three months, Olarewaju lived under the shadow of a criminal investigation, despite being the one who was attacked. Eventually, the case was dropped for lack of evidence, but not before causing him stress and prompting a reflection on the potential vulnerabilities even law-abiding citizens can face.
“Three months later, they’ve come back to say nothing to see here. They can’t find the guy who attacked my car, and they don’t have any more evidence on their charge against me,” Olarewaju added.
The ordeal left him with not only emotional scars but a newfound perspective on the importance of being legally prepared. He issued a warning to the public, especially people of color and immigrants, to always have access to legal representation in case of unexpected encounters with the justice system.
“So be careful out there. And if you don’t have legal representation already, have it ready just in case you go through a thing like this,” he advised. “I’m sure the police are doing a wonderful job to keep law and order, but some things go wrong sometimes.”
Muyiwa Olarewaju’s experience shines a spotlight on the complex and sometimes flawed nature of policing, especially when assumptions and systemic biases influence how cases are handled. It also highlights the mental and emotional toll that innocent individuals can suffer when they become entangled in unfounded investigations.
As one of the most respected voices in the UK gospel music scene, Olarewaju has not only led worship on international stages but has also served as a cultural ambassador and faith leader. His story has since prompted discussion across social media, with many expressing concern over the miscarriage of justice and urging authorities to adopt more transparent and fair investigative protocols.
While Olarewaju has chosen to share his experience as a warning and a call for caution, his calm and composed response underscores the need for resilience, preparedness, and vigilance in the face of unexpected adversity.
