In response to the extended 82-day power outage at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, University of Ibadan students peacefully demonstrated on Wednesday. The students’ anger at the lack of electricity at UCH, the university’s teaching hospital for medical students, sparked the early-morning protest.
According to reports, the 2024 power outage was brought on by unpaid bills that UCH owes to the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).
Bolaji Aweda, the president of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union, led the protest and voiced his worries about how the outage would directly affect the students.
“We are demonstrating against the current situation. Naturally, our students are impacted as well,” Aweda stated. Due to UCH’s inability to pay its electricity bill to IBEDC, there has not been any light at UCH for 82 days.
Before restoring power, IBEDC has insisted that UCH pay off its obligation,” he continued.
