The Federal Government has reopened the First Niger Bridge linking Onitsha, Anambra State, and Asaba, Delta State, after about 38 days of closure for rehabilitation works. Minister of Works Dave Umahi reopened the bridge on Thursday alongside government officials and traditional rulers from the two states. The bridge was shut on September 7 after damaged structural components, including steel parts around expansion joints, were discovered during inspections.

The rehabilitation, initially expected to be completed by September 21, was delayed by persistent rainfall and other challenges. Speaking at the reopening ceremony at the Onitsha end of the bridge, Umahi commended the contractor, SKCC, and the governors of Anambra and Delta states for their contributions to the project. He said the repairs were intended to improve traffic flow and enhance safety for motorists. However, the minister acknowledged that some aspects of the work were still being completed.
Reporters at the scene observed workers carrying out finishing touches, including work on sections of the bridge’s railings and road markings. CCTV cameras were also installed at various points.
Umahi used the occasion to urge residents of the South-East and South-South to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, citing the administration’s infrastructure projects in the regions. Photographs of Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, alongside APC banners, were reportedly displayed on the bridge following its reopening.
The First Niger Bridge, completed in 1965, is a major transport link between the South-East and South-South. Its closure had forced motorists to use alternative routes, increasing travel stress and transport costs. The reopening is expected to ease movement between the two regions, although road users should remain alert to any ongoing finishing work.
