Ghana has repatriated 120 Nigerians rescued during a cybercrime crackdown after authorities alleged that they had been trafficked into the country and forced to participate in online criminal activities. Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam George, announced the development on Tuesday, saying the repatriation followed a security operation known as Operation Cyberhunt. He expressed appreciation to the Ghana Air Force and the Ministry of Defence for facilitating the return of the Nigerian nationals.

According to George, the operation was led by Ghana’s Cyber Security Authority in collaboration with intelligence and security agencies from Ghana, Nigeria, the United Kingdom and the United States. Security operatives reportedly seized 136 mobile phones, 130 laptops, four vehicles, internet connectivity devices, jewellery and 10 Nigerian passports.

One of the recovered vehicles was reportedly stolen from Canada. The operation was aimed at dismantling facilities allegedly used for cybercrime and rescuing people suspected of being victims of trafficking and forced criminal activity.

The Ghanaian minister disclosed that eight other individuals were being processed for prosecution as investigations continued. He said President John Dramani Mahama’s administration would not allow Ghana to become a safe haven for cybercriminals, reaffirming the country’s commitment to fighting digital crime through international cooperation.

The case also highlights concerns about human trafficking and the alleged exploitation of victims in cross-border online criminal networks.
