Iran has expressed its readiness to support Nigeria in tackling terrorism and strengthening security cooperation, according to the country’s ambassador to Nigeria, Mahdavi Raja.

Speaking during an interview on Arise Television, Raja said the Iranian government is willing to assist Nigeria in its ongoing efforts to combat insurgency and other security threats affecting parts of the country.

The envoy noted that Iran maintains friendly diplomatic relations with Nigeria and is open to providing support where necessary, particularly in areas related to security and counter-terrorism cooperation.

Raja also addressed concerns about the relationship between Iran and some Islamic groups operating in Nigeria. According to him, such relationships are purely spiritual and cultural, stressing that they do not involve political influence or interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs.

“The relationship between Iran and Islamic groups in Nigeria is mainly religious and cultural. It is not political,” the ambassador explained during the interview.

Nigeria has been battling insurgency for more than a decade, particularly in the North-East region, where terrorist groups such as Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) have carried out attacks on communities and security forces.

Security analysts say increased international cooperation could help strengthen Nigeria’s counter-terrorism strategies through intelligence sharing, training, and technological support.

Iran’s latest statement signals a possible expansion of bilateral security cooperation between both countries as Nigeria continues efforts to stabilize affected regions and restore peace.
