LAGOS, Nigeria — Lagos State Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved a 13% increase in fares across Bus Rapid Transit routes, raising transport costs for commuters in the commercial capital, Feb. 24, 2026. The fare increase affects all BRT corridors operated under the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority framework. Authorities said the review followed consultations with transport stakeholders and operators.

State officials cited escalating fuel prices, vehicle maintenance costs and general economic pressures as key factors necessitating the upward review. They added that the adjustment is intended to ensure uninterrupted service delivery and fleet maintenance.

Commuters, however, expressed concern over the impact of the increase on household budgets amid broader cost-of-living challenges.

The Lagos government urged residents to cooperate with transport operators and assured that efforts would continue to improve service quality, safety and route efficiency.

The new fares are expected to take effect immediately across designated BRT routes statewide.
