The Nigerian Army has raised the alarm over an attempted breach of its official X account, following a series of unauthorised posts promoting memecoins that appeared on the platform on Saturday.

The Army said it had activated emergency security measures to regain and maintain full control of the account, describing the incident as a cybersecurity breach.

Reports indicate that the suspicious posts began appearing on the Army’s official X handle at about 3:50 p.m., raising concerns among users of the platform.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Appolonia Anele, said the military detected an attempt to gain unauthorised access to the account and immediately began efforts to secure it.

“The Nigerian Army has detected and is actively responding to an attempted unauthorised access to its official X (formerly Twitter) account,” Anele said in a statement shared on the Army’s Facebook page.

She said technical and protective measures had been activated to contain the incident, prevent further unauthorised access and protect the integrity of information shared through the platform.

According to her, the measures were necessary “to secure the account, prevent further unauthorised access and safeguard the integrity of information disseminated through the platform.”

The Army urged members of the public, the media and other stakeholders to disregard and avoid relying on suspicious information posted through the affected account until the security issue is fully resolved.

Anele assured Nigerians that efforts were ongoing to restore complete administrative control of the account.

“The Nigerian Army assures members of the public, the media and other stakeholders that appropriate measures are underway to fully secure the affected account and restore exclusive administrative control,” she said.

The incident comes barely two weeks after the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) disclosed that its own official X account had also been compromised.

The development has raised fresh concerns over cybersecurity and the protection of official government and military social media platforms from unauthorised access.
