Okorocha Denies Arrest, Accuses Imo Government Of Political Witch-Hunt

Police reportedly said former governor was arrested over alleged conspiracy, forgery and impersonation

Former Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has denied reports that he was arrested in Abuja on Monday night and released on bail after about an hour, describing the claim as false. The report followed comments attributed to police spokesperson Aniete Iniedu, who reportedly told Channels Television that the former governor was arrested over allegations of criminal conspiracy, forgery and impersonation before being released on bail after interrogation.

In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary and Special Adviser on Media, Sam Onwuemeodo, Okorocha insisted that he was never arrested, questioned or granted bail. He also accused the Imo State Government of engaging in a political witch-hunt against him. The former governor maintained that the police had relied on a court order dated September 9, 2026, which he said was vacated by the same court on September 14, 2026, making it invalid as a basis for any action in October.

Okorocha, who governed Imo State from 2011 to 2019, challenged those reporting his alleged arrest to provide proof and reiterated his position that the claims were untrue. However, the conflicting accounts from the police and the former governor leave key questions about the reported incident unresolved. Further clarification from the police and confirmation of the status of the court order would help establish the circumstances surrounding the claims.
