The vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Rabiu Kwankwaso, has claimed that President Bola Tinubu is concerned about the growing popularity of the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, ahead of the 2027 general elections. Kwankwaso made the claim on Thursday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he discussed the party’s preparations and its prospects in the forthcoming presidential contest.

According to Kwankwaso, Obi enjoys considerable popularity in southern Nigeria, while the NDC is working to mobilise supporters in the North. He claimed that the combination of Obi’s support base and the Kwankwasiyya political movement would strengthen the party’s chances at the polls. “Even the President is concerned about the person of our presidential candidate, and he has been having sleepless nights because of him,” Kwankwaso said.
The former Kano State governor also alleged that some political actors had previously considered ways to manipulate the election, although he provided no evidence for the claim in the remarks quoted. He expressed confidence in the NDC’s political strength, saying the party had attracted supporters seeking change and a different direction for the country.
“The Kwankwasiyya and, of course, people who believe in this country and those who are looking for a way out are supporting us. And together, we have a very formidable team,” he said. Tinubu’s alleged concerns, as described by Kwankwaso, were not independently established in the supplied report.
