The United States Mission in Nigeria has reminded visa applicants that fees paid for processing their applications are non-refundable, regardless of whether their applications are approved or rejected. The mission issued the clarification in a post on its official X account on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, explaining that the payment covers the processing of an application and does not guarantee visa approval.

According to the mission, the fee covers the application process until a final decision is reached. It stressed that applicants cannot demand a refund simply because their visa requests have been denied. The clarification is consistent with guidance from the US Department of State, which states that visa application fees are non-refundable because they cover the administrative cost of processing applications, irrespective of the outcome.

The department also states that applicants whose visa applications are refused under Section 214(b) of the US Immigration and Nationality Act must pay a new application fee if they choose to apply again. Section 214(b) generally applies when a non-immigrant visa applicant fails to establish eligibility for the visa category or fails to overcome the presumption of immigrant intent. The warning serves as a reminder to Nigerians planning to travel to the United States that paying the application fee does not guarantee approval and that a fresh application may require another payment.
