President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has departed Nigeria for a three-week vacation in Europe as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Tinubu left Abuja on Sunday for the break, with Presidential Adviser on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, describing the vacation as an opportunity for the President to rest, regain strength and prepare for the demanding months ahead.

Speaking with journalists shortly after the President’s departure, Dare said Tinubu had spent the past several months dealing with major national issues, particularly the economy and security.

“The President has had several months, six, seven months of being engaged with state matters. We’ve seen monumental changes, monumental decisions taken with our security, with our economy and so many other things as pertains to the running of the affairs of this country,” Dare said.

He noted that the political season had already begun, with several months of intense campaigning expected ahead of the 2027 elections.

“And at this point, the campaign season has just started. We have four, five months of serious campaigning. Of course, governance will still continue,” he added.

According to Dare, the President’s decision to take a break was necessary to enable him to “refuel” after months of intense official engagements.

Tinubu to Remain in Touch With Government

The presidential aide stressed that Tinubu’s absence from Nigeria would not mean a suspension of government activities.

He said the President would continue to receive regular briefings and remain in contact with ministers, service chiefs and other officials handling critical national matters.

“He will receive briefings from his ministers, from the service chiefs as the case may be, and from every other person who is handling very key decisions in our country,” Dare said.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, had earlier disclosed that London, United Kingdom, would be Tinubu’s first destination.

Onanuga said the President would return to Nigeria after the three-week vacation and participate in campaign activities ahead of the January 2027 presidential election.

The vacation comes as political parties and prospective candidates increasingly position themselves for what is expected to be a highly competitive 2027 electoral season.
