Senate President Godswill Akpabio has strongly denied allegations that he facilitated the disbursement of $15,000 in bribes to senators to secure their support for the recent state of emergency proclamation in Rivers State. The accusations, which surfaced on social media, claim that Akpabio distributed cash incentives during a fast-breaking event at his Maitama residence in Abuja. However, the Senate President has dismissed these claims as baseless and part of a malicious campaign against him.

Akpabio Refutes Allegations of Bribery

The controversy erupted after reports suggested that Akpabio allegedly handed out $5,000 to senators on Tuesday and an additional $10,000 on Wednesday, the eve of the vote on the emergency proclamation. The claims quickly gained traction online, fueling speculations about possible financial inducements.Akpabio Dismisses Allegations of $15,000 Bribery to Senators

Responding to the allegations, Akpabio’s Special Adviser on Media, Eseme Eyiboh, issued a strong rebuttal, insisting that the claims were entirely false. According to Eyiboh, the rumors were merely fabrications intended to tarnish Akpabio’s reputation and undermine his leadership.

“I am aware, and it is true that since Senator Godswill Akpabio became the President of the Senate, he has been breaking his fast. He did it last year, he did it this year, so why is it turning into a rumor now?” Eyiboh questioned.

He further argued that the logic behind the bribery allegations was flawed, stating that Akpabio had no reason to offer money to his colleagues for their votes.

Fast-Breaking Event Used as a Political Tool?

Eyiboh dismissed the notion that Akpabio used the fast-breaking gathering as an opportunity to distribute bribes, emphasizing that the event was purely a religious and social activity.

“On the issue of the dollars, he is giving the money for what? I am aware of the breaking of the fast, but I can tell you that I am not aware, and it is not true that the money was given, whether $5,000 or $10,000. People are just fabricating these stories to add flavor to their malice and hate campaign,” Eyiboh stated.

He also highlighted that Akpabio’s tradition of hosting fast-breaking events was not new and had taken place in previous years without similar allegations.

“He has been doing it. He did it last year, so why is this one associated with money?” he asked, implying that the controversy was politically motivated.

State of Emergency Proclamation in Rivers State

The allegations surfaced amid the recent proclamation of a state of emergency in Rivers State, a move that saw the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all members of the state House of Assembly for six months.

Both the Senate and the House of Representatives approved the proclamation with a unanimous voice vote, citing the need to restore order amid increasing political unrest in the state. The decision, which was taken by President Bola Tinubu, has sparked intense debate, with some questioning the political motivations behind the suspension of the state government.

Despite the allegations against Akpabio, the state of emergency was passed without opposition, further fueling speculations that political forces may be attempting to discredit the Senate President’s role in the process.

Political Motivations Behind the Allegations?

Observers believe the bribery accusations may be an attempt by political opponents to undermine Akpabio’s credibility, especially in light of his growing influence within the Senate. Some analysts argue that the timing of the allegations suggests a deliberate effort to sow discord among lawmakers and cast doubt on the legitimacy of the emergency proclamation.

Political tensions have been high in Rivers State in recent months, with factions within the state’s political leadership engaging in fierce power struggles. The suspension of the governor and other top officials has only added to the controversy, making it a sensitive issue that opponents may seek to exploit.

For Akpabio, the allegations represent yet another challenge in his leadership as Senate President. However, his camp remains adamant that the accusations are baseless and politically motivated.

Public Reaction and the Way Forward

The allegations have sparked mixed reactions among Nigerians, with some believing the claims could have merit, while others dismiss them as mere political propaganda. Social media has been flooded with debates over whether financial incentives played a role in securing Senate approval for the emergency declaration.

Meanwhile, calls for an official investigation into the matter have emerged, with some urging anti-corruption agencies to probe the allegations to ensure transparency in the country’s legislative processes.

As the situation continues to unfold, Akpabio remains firm in his stance, insisting that he has done nothing wrong and that the allegations are part of a larger scheme to discredit his leadership. The coming weeks will likely reveal whether the controversy fades away or leads to further political scrutiny.
