The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has dismissed widespread reports suggesting that Senator Sharafadeen Alli has been adopted as the party’s consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election. Party officials described the claims as unfounded speculation, urging members and the public to ignore such narratives.

The rumour, which circulated across media platforms, alleged that Alli—currently representing Oyo South Senatorial District—was endorsed during a meeting at the Lagos residence of Bola Tinubu. However, party insiders and stakeholders have moved swiftly to refute the claim, clarifying that no political endorsement took place.

According to Otunba Femi Awogboro, an aide to Adebayo Adelabu and one of the governorship aspirants, the gathering at the President’s residence was merely a Sallah visit and not a political strategy meeting. He emphasized that Adelabu remains a strong and active contender in the race for the party’s ticket.

Awogboro’s clarification adds to the growing chorus within the APC dismissing the idea of any pre-arranged consensus. Political observers note that such speculation often emerges early in election cycles, particularly as aspirants begin to position themselves for party primaries.

Further reinforcing the party’s stance, Oyo APC Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, stated unequivocally that no candidate has been selected for the 2027 governorship election. He stressed that the party has yet to initiate the formal processes that would lead to the emergence of its candidate.

“I’m not aware of any meeting where someone was chosen as a consensus candidate,” Sadare said, reiterating that the APC does not base its decisions on rumours or media speculation.

He added that the party’s immediate priorities lie in its internal organizational activities, including preparations for the upcoming zonal convention in Lagos and the national convention in Abuja. These events are seen as critical steps in strengthening party structures ahead of future electoral contests.

Sadare also assured party members that when the time comes, a credible candidate will emerge through established democratic processes. His remarks highlight the APC’s commitment to internal democracy, a key issue often raised in Nigerian political discourse.

Meanwhile, the political landscape in Oyo State is gradually heating up as the 2027 election approaches. Multiple aspirants within the APC are believed to be mobilizing support, signaling what could become a highly competitive primary season.

Analysts suggest that early endorsements—whether real or perceived—can influence public perception and intra-party dynamics. However, the APC’s swift denial indicates an effort to maintain unity and prevent premature divisions among its ranks.

As political activities intensify, stakeholders are expected to keep a close watch on developments within the party, particularly as aspirants continue to build alliances and strengthen their grassroots support.

For now, the APC leadership in Oyo State appears focused on ensuring that due process prevails, while discouraging speculation that could disrupt party cohesion ahead of the crucial 2027 elections.
