Aregbesola Declares Independence for Omoluabi Progressives in 2026 Osun Election
Former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, has emphatically ruled out any possibility of his political group, the Omoluabi Progressives, entering into an alliance or coalition with any party ahead of the 2026 governorship election in the state. Speaking during a reception organized in Osogbo to celebrate his 68th birthday on Sunday, Aregbesola made it clear that the group would chart its own political path independently.
Addressing a crowd of loyalists and political associates, Aregbesola reaffirmed his group’s dedication to its own vision, declaring that the Omoluabi Progressives would pursue their ambitions without compromise or external affiliation.

“By this time next year, we will all be close to Abere (Osun Governor’s Office). May God make it so,” Aregbesola said, expressing confidence in the group’s chances. “People are having the untrue impression that we will align with anyone in the governorship poll. We are not going to align with anyone. We are going to pursue our political interest separately. No alliance with anyone or group. By the grace of God, this group will win. We will contest and we will win.”
No Alliance, No Merger—Omoluabi Progressives to Contest Solo in Osun Guber Race
Aregbesola’s declaration is a major political statement that sends a clear message to both allies and opponents within Osun’s political terrain. By confirming that his faction will not be part of any coalition, he has positioned the Omoluabi Progressives as a standalone political force to watch in the upcoming elections.
The Omoluabi Progressives, known for their strong grassroots mobilization and ideological commitment to governance reform, have been rebuilding their structure in Osun State after parting ways with dominant political blocs. Aregbesola’s reaffirmation of their independent path sets the tone for a competitive and possibly unpredictable governorship race.
Reflecting on the group’s broader political aspirations, Aregbesola stated that their mission is not limited to 2026 alone. “The election that will follow that of next year,” he hinted, suggesting a longer-term strategy for political influence in the state and beyond.
In a heartfelt interlude during the event, Aregbesola deviated from politics to offer a personal reflection. Speaking to the emotional significance of birthdays, he urged attendees to always honor their mothers during such celebrations. “Whenever you are celebrating your birthday, always remember to pray for your mother. The pains they endure during childbirth are enormous,” he said. “So whether alive or late, birthday celebrations should be dedicated to prayers for mothers.”
The event, which doubled as a rallying platform and birthday tribute, drew several notable figures in Osun politics. Among them was Moshood Adeoti, the former Secretary to the State Government during Aregbesola’s administration. Adeoti encouraged members of the Omoluabi Progressives to stay committed and remain focused on their shared vision for Osun.
“Our group represents a unique brand of politics that is rooted in values and service,” Adeoti said. “We must not waver. We have a responsibility to reclaim our place in Osun’s leadership and governance.”
Interestingly, the presence of a representative from the current administration added a unifying touch to the otherwise partisan gathering. Biyi Odunlade, who represented Governor Ademola Adeleke, delivered a goodwill message and acknowledged Aregbesola’s enduring legacy.
“I celebrate you because you left a good template for good governance in Osun State that cannot be faulted by anybody,” Odunlade remarked, highlighting Aregbesola’s infrastructural and administrative contributions during his two terms as governor.
Aregbesola’s public stance, coming more than a year before the 2026 elections, is expected to influence strategic alignments in the state’s political scene. His decision to steer clear of alliances could reshape how other parties plan their campaigns, especially considering the Omoluabi Progressives’ organizational strength and Aregbesola’s enduring popularity among a segment of Osun voters.
As Osun’s political calendar heats up, all eyes will be on how this independent campaign evolves and whether Aregbesola’s faction can indeed secure the electoral success he so confidently envisions.
