In a dramatic political development that could reshape the landscape of Delta State, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This announcement was made late Wednesday evening following a high-stakes, closed-door meeting held at the Government House in Asaba, the state capital.

Oborevwori, who was elected under the PDP banner in the 2023 general elections, did not make this move alone. Accompanied by his deputy, Monday Onyeme, his entire cabinet of commissioners, and key PDP stakeholders in Delta State, the governor’s defection marks a seismic shift in the state’s political balance.

Top APC figures were reportedly present during the announcement, symbolizing the warm embrace of the new entrants into the ruling party’s fold. The move is being interpreted by political analysts as a well-timed maneuver that could have major implications for the 2027 general elections.

Defection Decision Driven by ‘Development Goals’

Speaking to Arise TV via telephone, the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, confirmed the development. He described the defection as the outcome of “extensive consultations with political stakeholders” and emphasized that the move was taken “in the interest of Delta’s long-term development.”

Ahon elaborated that Governor Oborevwori remains committed to delivering the dividends of democracy and believes the APC platform offers better alignment with his developmental objectives. According to insiders, the governor had been under pressure from within his inner circle and some state political elites who felt that continued allegiance to the PDP would hinder his broader governance goals.

Oborevwori’s decision also appears to be influenced by national political currents. The APC currently holds power at the federal level, and aligning with the ruling party could potentially attract more federal support and resources for Delta State.

A Calculated Move with 2027 in Sight

While Governor Oborevwori has not directly commented on future political ambitions, analysts believe the defection is part of a broader strategy aimed at positioning himself and his allies favorably for the 2027 general elections. Having emerged victorious in a hotly contested gubernatorial election just a year ago, his unexpected move to the APC is already generating buzz across the South-South region.

Observers say that the governor’s switch may embolden other PDP members in the region to reconsider their political affiliations. With Oborevwori bringing along a sizable portion of the Delta PDP’s leadership, the opposition party in the state is now left grappling with a significant leadership vacuum.

This wave of political migration could also trigger realignments within the APC, as existing power blocs within the party are forced to accommodate the influx of new members with considerable political capital and influence.

Viral Video Hinted at Political Crossroads

The governor’s defection didn’t entirely catch the public off guard. A viral video surfaced days prior, showing Oborevwori in what appeared to be a cordial gathering with notable APC figures. At the time, his media team dismissed the footage as outdated and irrelevant, calling it “old and misleading.”

Nonetheless, the video stirred speculation online, with many questioning whether Oborevwori was considering a departure from the PDP. That speculation has now been confirmed, placing Delta State in the national spotlight as political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections begin to take shape.

For now, the PDP is left to reckon with the loss of one of its most prominent governors in the region, while the APC continues to consolidate its political dominance with high-profile defections. As the dust settles, all eyes are on how this shift will influence governance in Delta and the broader political dynamics of the South-South region.
