A Finnish Court of Appeal has reduced the prison sentence of Nigerian-born Biafran separatist leader Simon Ekpa from six years to four years while upholding his convictions on terrorism-related charges. According to Finland’s national public broadcaster, Yle News, the court maintained the findings that Ekpa participated in a terrorist organisation and publicly encouraged crimes for terrorist purposes, but reduced his sentence after considering the circumstances surrounding his activities.

The case was linked to Ekpa’s campaign for an independent Biafran state in southeastern Nigeria. The earlier ruling by the Päijät-Häme District Court found that he used his social media following to heighten tensions in the region between August 2021 and November 2024 and encouraged criminal acts in pursuit of the separatist cause.

Ekpa challenged the conviction, arguing that his activities should be considered in the context of the political situation in the region rather than as terrorism. The prosecution also appealed, arguing that the original six-year sentence was insufficient for the seriousness of the offences.

In reviewing the case, the appeal court reportedly considered conditions in the Biafran region, describing them as resembling a civil war in some respects, although they did not fully meet the legal definition of one.

The court nevertheless upheld the guilty verdicts while reducing the prison term by two years. Ekpa, 41, moved from Nigeria to Finland in 2007 and has lived in Lahti, where he previously served as a city councillor under Finland’s National Coalition Party. The ruling marks a significant development in the legal proceedings against the separatist figure, whose activities have been linked to tensions surrounding the Biafran independence movement.
