Economic Growth and Stability in Oyo State
Speaking at the gathering, Governor Makinde highlighted the economic progress recorded under his administration, stating that the steady injection of funds into the economy through salaries and investments has contributed to financial stability and increased business confidence.
“Now, every four weeks, ₦24 billion flows into the economy of Oyo State through workers’ salaries. The state government’s wage bill is ₦14 billion, while that of the local governments stands at ₦10 billion. This has positively impacted economic activities in the state,” Makinde stated.
Beyond the public sector, the governor also noted that private investors are increasingly confident in investing in Oyo State due to the state’s stable economic environment. He cited the development of the Farmers’ Wholesale Market in Ijaiye Farm Settlement, which is part of his administration’s commitment to enhancing agricultural production and commerce.
“Yesterday, we visited the Ijaiye Farm Settlement for the new Farmers’ Wholesale Market. The settlement covers 27,000 hectares of land, and we have set aside 3,000 hectares for the project. This initiative will improve trade and provide farmers with direct access to markets, boosting productivity and income,” he explained.
The Role of Peace and Unity in Development
Governor Makinde credited the peaceful coexistence among residents as a key driver of Oyo State’s current economic progress. He urged all citizens to maintain peace and unity, stressing that development can only thrive in a stable environment.
“Oyo State is now known for peace, unity, and harmony. When we cast our minds back to 2007, things were quite different. Before, there were divisions even during religious gatherings like Eid prayers, where people from different political parties would avoid each other. Today, we see a change. Everyone gathered for prayers and came together in unity. This is the Oyo State we must continue to build,” Makinde remarked.
The governor warned against returning to past periods of political division and unrest, emphasizing that patience and collaboration are essential to achieving sustainable progress.
Leadership and Governance in Challenging Times
Acknowledging the economic challenges faced by Nigerians, Governor Makinde called on political officeholders across the country to work towards improving citizens’ welfare. He reassured the people of Oyo State that his administration remains focused on alleviating economic hardships through policy interventions and infrastructural development.
“It has been a difficult and challenging period for many people. However, as the saying goes, tough times don’t last, but tough people do. Political leaders must remain focused on improving conditions for the people, and we must all work together to build a stronger state,” he urged.
The governor expressed his commitment to ensuring that Oyo State continues on a path of steady economic growth, emphasizing the importance of inclusive governance, infrastructure development, and social welfare programs.
