Former Sokoto State governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Tambuwal announced the decision in the early hours of Thursday through a statement shared on X, explaining that the move followed extensive consultations and reflection.

The former governor cited the persistent internal crisis within the PDP, leadership disputes, and increasing divisions among party members as key factors that influenced his departure.

His defection marks another significant development in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape as parties begin to reposition ahead of future electoral contests.

In his statement, Tambuwal confirmed that he had formally notified his ward chairman of his resignation through a written letter before publicly announcing the move.

“Today, after deep reflection and consultations, I have formally resigned my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party, and I have communicated my resignation to my ward chairman in writing,” he said.

The politician acknowledged the important role the PDP played in shaping his political journey. His career within the party includes serving as Speaker of the House of Representatives Nigeria and later completing two terms as governor of Sokoto State.

Despite this long association, Tambuwal said the party’s current state of internal conflict made it difficult for him to remain.

According to him, the ongoing disagreements and factional divisions have weakened the unity and direction that once defined the PDP.

“The persistent internal crisis, leadership disagreements, and growing divisions within the PDP have made it increasingly difficult to continue my membership of the party,” he explained.

Choosing ADC as a New Political Platform

Tambuwal also outlined why he decided to join the African Democratic Congress as his new political home.

He expressed confidence that the party provides a stronger platform capable of advancing democratic values and national development in Nigeria.

“I am convinced that this decision is guided by my belief that Nigeria needs a stronger political platform built on integrity, accountability, inclusiveness, and a clear commitment to national development,” he said.

The former governor added that several of his political associates and supporters have also joined him in moving to the ADC.
