A recent fact-check investigation has uncovered a possible link between the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, and a controversial 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) account, sparking widespread calls for his resignation.

The findings, reported by Daily Trust, have raised concerns among political parties, civil society organisations, and members of the public over the perceived neutrality of Nigeria’s electoral body.

Army Arrests Teenager Over Killing Of General Braimah In Borno

According to the report, the 𝕏 account in question allegedly posted partisan comments during the 2023 general elections, with messages interpreted as supportive of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu.

Some of the posts cited include:

  • A March 17, 2023 reply describing certain political supporters as “evil in the 24th century.”
  • A March 18 response to an APC youth leader stating “Victory is sure.”
  • An April 25 reaction to a pro-Tinubu post with the word “Asiwaju.”

Digital Footprint Raises Questions

Investigators reportedly traced the account’s origin:

  • Created on September 6, 2022
  • Initially used the handle @joashamupitan
  • Recently renamed to @Sundayvibe00
  • Later locked and marked as a “Parody Account”

This timeline has fueled suspicion among critics, who argue that the sudden changes suggest an attempt to distance the account from its alleged owner.

Public Reaction and Calls for Resignation

Several groups have called for Prof. Amupitan’s resignation, arguing that:

  • Any perceived political bias undermines public trust in INEC
  • The chairman’s role requires strict neutrality and independence

They insist that even the appearance of partisanship could damage the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process.

Despite the claims, no official confirmation has conclusively proven that the account belongs to Prof. Amupitan. The allegations remain under scrutiny, and no formal response from the INEC chairman has been widely reported at this time.
