President Bola Tinubu has appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu as the Acting  Inspector-General of Police (IGP), effective immediately.
This follows the acceptance of the resignation of the previous IGP, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, who cited personal reasons for stepping down. The decoration ceremony took place at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on February 25, 2026, where President Tinubu formally bestowed the rank on Disu. The new Acting IGP, Olatunji Disu, a 59-year-old Lagos-born officer, described his appointment as unexpected, coming just weeks before his planned retirement on April 13, 2026.
He expressed deep gratitude to President Tinubu for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to lead with a renewed focus on service delivery amid Nigeria’s ongoing security challenges. In his post-decoration remarks, Acting IGP Disu declared that his top priority is to reorient officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force. He emphasized that Nigerian citizens are the true “bosses” and superiors whom officers must serve respectfully.
Disu stated clearly that the era of impunity within the force is over. The acting IGP further vowed zero tolerance for corruption and human rights abuses by police personnel. He committed to prioritizing the welfare of officers, noting that motivated personnel perform better, while insisting that strict accountability will now prevail to rebuild public trust.
Disu’s appointment comes against the backdrop of long-standing criticisms of the Nigeria Police Force, including allegations of routine harassment, extortion, and extrajudicial actions—issues that gained renewed attention after the 2020 #EndSARS protests. Public reactions to his statements have been mixed, with some expressing cautious optimism and others demanding concrete actions, particularly against everyday abuses faced by groups like okada riders and market women.
President Tinubu has charged the new acting IGP to intensify efforts against banditry, terrorism, kidnapping, and other violent crimes plaguing the country. The Police Council is expected to meet soon to consider Disu’s confirmation as substantive IGP, after which his name would be forwarded to the Senate for approval.
