The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a stern warning to Nigerians over the circulation of counterfeit Cowbell “Our Milk” 12g sachets in local markets. The agency, in a public alert released on Friday via 𝕏, revealed that the imitation product was discovered following a report from Promasidor Nigeria Ltd, the rightful marketing authorization holder and manufacturer of Cowbell products.

According to NAFDAC, Promasidor discontinued the production of Cowbell “Our Milk” in September 2023, replacing it with a newer product known as Cowbell “Our Creamy Goodness.” However, counterfeiters have exploited this transition by circulating fake versions of the now-discontinued product, deceiving unsuspecting consumers into buying unsafe and unauthorized milk sachets.

The agency stressed that these counterfeit products were not produced or distributed by Promasidor Nigeria Ltd and carried unauthorized use of the Cowbell brand name, NAFDAC registration number, and packaging design.

Counterfeit Cowbell Milk Raises Health Concerns

In its official statement, tagged Public Alert No. 026/2025, NAFDAC warned that the consumption of counterfeit milk poses serious health hazards. The agency highlighted that such products often contain toxic chemicals, harmful additives, or diluted substances that can lead to severe health complications.

“Risks include foodborne illnesses, allergic reactions, organ damage, and in extreme cases, death,” the agency stated. Vulnerable groups such as infants, children, pregnant women, and the elderly were identified as particularly at risk of adverse effects from consuming the fake product.

The counterfeit Cowbell “Our Milk” sachets are reportedly being sold in 12g packages, with fraudulent claims of being manufactured by Promasidor Nigeria Ltd. The fake packaging displays a production date of April 2025 and an expiry date of December 2028, a timeline inconsistent with Promasidor’s confirmed discontinuation of the product in 2023.

NAFDAC warned the public to remain vigilant and avoid purchasing the counterfeit sachets, urging consumers to check product details carefully before buying.

Official Reaction from Promasidor Nigeria Ltd

Promasidor, the company behind the Cowbell brand, has distanced itself from the counterfeit milk sachets. The company reaffirmed that it no longer produces Cowbell “Our Milk” and cautioned distributors, retailers, and consumers to stop patronising the fraudulent products.

Promasidor explained that since September 2023, its only official brand replacement has been Cowbell “Our Creamy Goodness.” Any Cowbell “Our Milk” product currently circulating in markets is therefore fake, and customers are urged to exercise extra caution when purchasing milk sachets bearing the Cowbell brand.

The company assured that it is working closely with NAFDAC to track down the sources of the counterfeit production and distribution in order to protect consumers.

Public Guidance on Counterfeit Products

To safeguard Nigerians from potential harm, NAFDAC has provided specific instructions for consumers and healthcare professionals. The agency advised that any suspicion of substandard or counterfeit food products should be reported immediately to the nearest NAFDAC office. Reports can also be made through its toll-free number 0800-162-3322 or via email at sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.

The agency further encouraged healthcare providers to stay alert for patients showing symptoms that may result from consuming counterfeit milk products, such as stomach upset, allergic reactions, or unexplained illnesses after intake.

Additionally, NAFDAC reminded retailers and distributors of their legal responsibility to ensure that only authorised products are sold to the public. Selling counterfeit or unregistered products constitutes a violation of Nigerian food safety laws and attracts severe penalties.

A Wider Battle Against Counterfeit Goods

The circulation of fake Cowbell “Our Milk” highlights Nigeria’s broader struggle with counterfeit products across multiple industries, including pharmaceuticals, food, beverages, and cosmetics. NAFDAC has consistently battled to curb this menace, warning that counterfeit goods not only endanger public health but also undermine trust in legitimate brands and weaken the economy.

This latest case reflects the sophistication of counterfeiters who exploit brand recognition and consumer trust to market fake products. Analysts suggest that beyond regulatory enforcement, public awareness campaigns and stricter border controls are essential in curbing the infiltration of counterfeit goods into Nigerian markets.

In concluding its warning, NAFDAC urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and purchase only from trusted, authorised sources. The agency reiterated that authentic Cowbell milk products currently available in the market are strictly under the label Cowbell “Our Creamy Goodness.”

Consumers are advised to check product packaging, dates, and registration details carefully to avoid falling victim to counterfeit goods. NAFDAC reassured the public that it remains committed to safeguarding the health of Nigerians and will continue its crackdown on counterfeiters.

With food safety increasingly under threat from fake and substandard products, the agency’s warning serves as a critical reminder that consumer vigilance and prompt reporting are key to preventing widespread harm.
