A former presidential aide, Laolu Akande, has stated that two prominent southern politicians—Rotimi Amaechi and Peter Obi—are currently the most credible figures capable of challenging President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

Akande made the remarks on Friday during an appearance on Sunrise Daily, a political programme on Channels Television. His comments come amid growing debate among opposition parties about who should lead a unified challenge against the ruling party in the next general election.

He emphasized that a strong and organized opposition is essential for maintaining a healthy democratic system in Nigeria.

According to Akande, democracy thrives when there is a meaningful challenge to the ruling government. He stressed that public discourse and political engagement are necessary to strengthen the democratic space and ensure accountability.

Akande argued that opposition parties should recognize the political reality that the presidency is expected to remain in the southern region in the next electoral cycle.

He noted that discussions within opposition circles should focus on credible southern leaders who have experience in governance and the capacity to build a broad political coalition capable of confronting the ruling party.

Among those he identified as well-positioned are Amaechi and Obi, both of whom have extensive political backgrounds and national recognition.

Amaechi, currently associated with the African Democratic Congress, has previously suggested that the party should consider presenting a southern candidate in the next presidential election. The former Rivers State governor has also served as Speaker of the state assembly and Minister of Transportation, roles that Akande believes have given him significant administrative experience.

Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party Nigeria in the 2023 election, has already indicated his intention to run again in 2027. His previous campaign gained widespread support, particularly among younger voters and urban populations.

Akande said the opposition would need to rally around leaders with proven records if they intend to present a serious challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Atiku’s Influence Still Looms Over Opposition Politics

Despite advocating for southern candidates, Akande acknowledged that the continued political presence of Atiku Abubakar remains a major factor within opposition politics.

He explained that Atiku’s influence is creating uncertainty among opposition groups regarding the direction of their strategy for the 2027 election.

According to him, the “shadow” of Atiku’s potential candidacy is still hanging over the political landscape, making it difficult for opposition parties to clearly define their leadership direction.

Akande warned that if opposition parties fail to quickly organize around credible candidates with strong governance experience, Atiku could once again emerge as the dominant figure within the opposition camp due to his political strength and influence.

Political analysts say the debate reflects broader discussions about zoning, political strategy, and coalition-building ahead of the next presidential race.

With the 2027 election still some years away, conversations about potential candidates and regional representation are already shaping the strategies of Nigeria’s opposition parties as they seek to challenge the incumbent administration.
