Tensions in East Asia have risen after North Korea launched what is believed to be a ballistic missile toward Japan, triggering alarm across the region. According to reports from South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, the missile was fired on Saturday from North Korean territory and travelled toward the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea.
Japanese authorities confirmed that the projectile appeared to have landed outside Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), though the government immediately activated its emergency alert system and urged citizens to remain vigilant. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said officials are currently analysing the missile’s range, trajectory, and potential threat while condemning the launch as a violation of United Nations Security Council resolutions.

South Korea and the United States have also strongly criticised the test, describing it as a destabilising action that threatens regional security. Military officials in Seoul said they are closely monitoring the situation and maintaining a high state of readiness alongside U.S. forces.
The latest launch adds to a series of weapons tests conducted by Pyongyang, which has continued to develop its missile programme despite international sanctions. Analysts say the move could further escalate tensions in the region as neighbouring countries increase defence preparedness.
