NUEE Condemns Attack on IKEDC Workers, Threatens Nationwide Strike

The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) has strongly condemned a violent attack on workers of the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC), allegedly carried out by personnel from the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Base in Ikeja. The incident, described as an act of intimidation and brutality, has prompted the union to threaten a nationwide withdrawal of services unless the safety of its members is assured.

NUEE Demands Justice After Alleged Military Assault

In an official statement, NUEE’s acting General Secretary, Dominic Igwebike, detailed the assault, which reportedly occurred at both the Corporate Headquarters and Oshodi Business Unit of IKEDC.

“On resumption of duty this morning, some military personnel from NAF Ikeja Base invaded the Corporate Headquarters and Oshodi Business Unit offices of the company, beating up and molesting every staff member they encountered,” Igwebike said.

The attackers allegedly vandalized office equipment, personal belongings such as phones, laptops, and vehicles, and even took away the Oshodi Business Unit’s Commercial Manager and 13 drivers, subjecting them to torture and inhumane treatment.

Power Disconnection Linked to the Attack

According to the union, the military invasion was triggered by the disconnection of power supply to the Air Force Base over unpaid electricity bills. The incident has raised concerns over the use of force and intimidation against utility workers carrying out their official duties.

NUEE described the attack as “brutal and barbaric”, calling on the Federal Ministry of Power and the Ministry of Defence to urgently intervene.

“We unequivocally denounce this dastardly act from the military and demand the immediate release of our affected members,” the union stated. They further urged the government to ensure that such incidents do not repeat and to hold those responsible accountable.

Threat of Nationwide Strike Looms

In response to the attack, NUEE has directed its members to stay away from work until their safety is guaranteed.

“Until the safety of lives and property is assured, we will have no choice but to withdraw our services nationwide,” the union warned.

They also demanded compensation for destroyed properties, medical treatment for injured staff, and a formal undertaking from the government to protect electricity workers from further intimidation.

The situation has raised concerns about potential power disruptions if the union proceeds with its threatened nationwide strike. As the controversy unfolds, the Federal Government and military authorities are under pressure to address the issue and prevent further escalation.
