Lagos, Nigeria – Former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, on Monday visited the Lagos office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as part of an ongoing investigation into allegations of financial misappropriation during his tenure in office.
Sources within the anti-corruption agency disclosed that Okowa’s appearance before investigators is connected to allegations involving the diversion of public funds while he served as governor of Delta State between 2015 and 2023.
The latest development comes months after the EFCC arrested the former governor in November 2024 over allegations that approximately ₦1.3 trillion was diverted during his eight-year administration.

Investigators are also examining claims that public funds were allegedly used to acquire several properties in Asaba, the Delta State capital, and in Abuja.

Following his earlier arrest, Okowa maintained that funds belonging to Delta State were properly utilized and insisted he had nothing to fear from the investigation.
The former governor stated that he entered office with a commitment to serve the people and manage the state’s resources responsibly.
“I am not afraid to be investigated,” Okowa had said, stressing that he acted within the limits of available resources while pursuing development projects during his administration.
He also accused the EFCC of conducting what he described as a media trial, arguing that public narratives surrounding the case had been shaped before the conclusion of investigations.
Okowa governed Delta State under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from 2015 to 2023.
He later emerged as the running mate to Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 presidential election.
In a significant political shift, Okowa defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in April 2025 alongside his successor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and several political officeholders in Delta State.
The EFCC has yet to publicly disclose the outcome of Monday’s engagement with the former governor, while investigations into the allegations remain ongoing.
