Osun StateAdeleke Issues Strong Warning Amid Rising Tensions

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has issued a stern warning to traditional rulers, urging them to caution their subjects against escalating communal violence in their respective communities. His warning follows reports of faceless groups allegedly planning another wave of attacks in conflict-prone areas.

The governor’s statement comes in response to the recurring violence in Ifon, Ilobu, and Erin-Osun towns, which previously resulted in loss of lives and destruction of property worth millions of Naira. To curb further clashes, the state government had earlier imposed an indefinite 24-hour curfew in the affected areas. However, the restriction was temporarily relaxed for the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations to allow residents some relief during the festive period.

Government Remains Watchful Amid Curfew Adjustments

Despite the curfew relaxation, Governor Adeleke emphasized that his administration remains vigilant and will not tolerate any resurgence of hostilities. In a statement released by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, on Monday, March 31, 2025, in Osogbo, the governor reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining law and order. He warned that any attempt to exploit the curfew adjustment for renewed violence would result in the full re-imposition of the 24-hour restriction.

“In the midst of Sallah celebrations, I got reports of some people planning another round of conflict around Ifon, Ilobu, and Erin-Osun towns. Security agencies have tightened surveillance to ensure no attacks take place,” the governor stated.

He further noted that law enforcement agencies were interrogating key actors and chieftains involved in the conflict to ensure justice. “The security agencies are speeding up their investigations to hold those responsible for the crisis accountable. I remind the top leaders of these towns that the peace agreements they signed are not for show. They will be held accountable before the law,” he added.

Traditional Rulers Face Potential Removal Over Violence

Governor Adeleke issued a direct warning to the traditional rulers of the affected areas, emphasizing that they must take responsibility for maintaining peace within their domains. He declared that any royal father whose town experiences a resurgence of violence risks removal from office.

“The curfew relaxation was granted on humanitarian grounds. As a compassionate government, we understand that many innocent people are suffering due to the actions of a few individuals with evil agendas. However, if any attempt is made to use this leniency to ignite further violence, we will not hesitate to reimpose the 24-hour curfew in full,” Adeleke warned.

Furthermore, the governor underscored that his administration would not hesitate to wield the big stick if the situation escalates again. He urged traditional rulers to call their subjects to order and ensure that peace is sustained.

“Additionally, I will remove from office any traditional ruler where violence recurs. This measure is on the table. It is the responsibility of royal fathers to maintain peace in their domains. Enough is enough,” he declared.

Government’s Commitment to Lasting Peace

Governor Adeleke’s tough stance reflects his administration’s dedication to restoring lasting peace in Osun State. The ongoing communal clashes between Ifon, Ilobu, and Erin-Osun have led to significant security concerns, prompting the state government to take decisive action.

By holding traditional rulers accountable and working closely with security agencies, the government aims to dismantle any plans for renewed violence. The governor’s warning serves as a strong message to those fueling the conflict that law and order will be enforced without compromise.

As Osun State moves forward, residents are urged to cooperate with the authorities and embrace peace to foster development, unity, and prosperity in their communities. The government remains committed to ensuring that all citizens can live without fear of violence or unrest.
