The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has urged former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election on its platform, amid growing speculation over his potential political return. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has urged former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election on its platform, amid growing speculation over his potential political return.
In an exclusive interview with Saturday PUNCH, Ibrahim Abdullahi, the party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, said it would be a regrettable development if Jonathan chose another party for his presidential bid.
“We have been waiting for Jonathan to come back and finish what he started with us. Our party has always been proud of his achievements,” Abdullahi stated, underscoring the PDP’s historical role in shaping Nigeria’s leadership.
He further emphasised that figures like Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Amina Mohammed, and other prominent Nigerians were products of the PDP, showcasing the party’s legacy in the nation’s development.
Abdullahi urged Jonathan not to be swayed by recent political endorsements from groups that once criticised him.
“If Jonathan considers running, he must remember how these same people once derided him,” Abdullahi warned.
“Their sudden affection for him now must not cloud his judgment.”
Speculation about Jonathan’s return gained traction after his presidential posters appeared on major streets in Kano, featuring slogans such as “Team New Nigeria 2027; The Goodluck Nigeria Needs.”
These posters were linked to a political movement, “Team New Nigeria,” which has been actively promoting Jonathan’s potential candidacy.
This development mirrors previous incidents where supporters purchased nomination forms for Jonathan under the All Progressives Congress, APC, before the 2023 elections, although the former president distanced himself from such moves.
Moreover, key political figures from northern Nigeria have been reported to be rallying for Jonathan to run, believing he is eligible for a second term after serving as president from 2011 to 2015.
Inside the PDP, uncertainty looms over the party’s future, with critical decisions set to be made at its upcoming National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting, scheduled for February 2025.
A source within the party noted, “The outcome of the February NEC meeting will significantly shape the party’s future.”
Since the controversial removal of former National Chairman Iyorchia Ayu, PDP’s Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum has faced mounting criticism.
Party members have called for his resignation, citing concerns over his leadership.
At the 98th NEC meeting earlier in April 2024, party leaders approved the formation of a reconciliation and disciplinary committee, alongside plans for congresses.
However, the much-anticipated 99th NEC meeting has been postponed multiple times due to logistical issues and differing agendas.
A senior party member revealed that the NEC meeting is crucial for resolving the PDP’s internal struggles.
“Every decision made at the NEC will have significant consequences for the party,” the source warned.
