The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed a devastating series of coordinated explosions in Maiduguri, leaving at least 23 people dead and 108 others injured. The tragic incident, which occurred on Monday evening, has heightened concerns about the evolving tactics of insurgent groups operating in Nigeria’s North-East region.

According to official reports, the blasts were recorded at approximately 7:24 p.m. and targeted multiple high-traffic and strategic locations within the state capital. Authorities identified the affected areas as the bustling Monday Market, the entrance gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the busy Post Office Flyover.

Police sources described the attacks as coordinated suicide bombings carried out using improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The near-simultaneous nature of the explosions has raised alarm among security experts, pointing to a calculated attempt to maximize casualties and spread panic across the city.

In an official statement, Police Public Relations Officer ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso disclosed that preliminary investigations strongly suggest the involvement of suspected suicide bombers. The choice of targets—a major commercial hub, a healthcare facility, and a critical traffic junction—indicates a deliberate strategy aimed at disrupting socio-economic activities and instilling fear among residents.

In response to the explosions, a joint security operation involving police tactical units, military personnel, and other agencies was swiftly deployed to the affected locations. The areas were immediately secured and cordoned off to prevent further harm while the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit conducted thorough sweep operations to detect and neutralize any additional threats.

The Commissioner of Police in Borno State, Naziru Abdulmajid, personally led a high-level assessment visit to the blast sites. During his visit, he expressed deep condolences to the victims and their families, assuring the public of the police command’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property.

He further announced that enhanced security measures have been activated throughout the state. These measures include increased patrols, intelligence surveillance, and strategic positioning of security personnel in vulnerable areas.

Emergency response efforts were promptly initiated, with the National Emergency Management Agency and the Borno State Emergency Management Agency working closely with medical teams to evacuate victims. The injured were transported to various hospitals within Maiduguri, where they are currently receiving treatment.

Despite the scale of destruction, authorities have emphasized ongoing efforts to restore normalcy in the city. Security presence has been significantly reinforced not only within Maiduguri but also in surrounding communities to prevent further incidents.

Residents have been urged to remain calm yet vigilant. Authorities are calling on the public to report any suspicious activities, movements, or objects to security agencies promptly. The cooperation of citizens, officials say, remains critical in maintaining safety and preventing future attacks.

The police command also commended the resilience and cooperation shown by residents during the crisis. Officials reiterated their determination to maintain peace and stability in Borno State, even as investigations into the incident continue.

As Maiduguri begins to recover from this tragic event, the attacks serve as a stark reminder of the persistent security challenges in the region and the need for sustained vigilance and coordinated response efforts.
