President Bola Tinubu has confirmed that members of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, and their coaching staff have received the presidential rewards promised to them following their historic success at the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship.

Tinubu, in a personally signed statement posted on his X account on Thursday, said each D’Tigress player had received the naira equivalent of $100,000, while each official received the equivalent of $50,000.

The President said the payments completed the reward package, which also included national honours and three-bedroom homes in Abuja for the players and officials.

According to Tinubu, the government had to complete the necessary legal and administrative processes before releasing the cash component of the rewards.

“Today, the rewards I promised our D’Tigress have been fully redeemed.

“Each player has received the naira equivalent of $100,000, while each official has received the equivalent of $50,000, completing their package of cash rewards, national honours and three-bedroom homes in Abuja.

“For the first time, a Federal Government has fulfilled this scale of presidential sporting rewards in full within one year. We had to follow the processes required by law and ensure that every commitment was properly implemented. That took time, but a promise made must be a promise kept,” he said.

D’Tigress earned the reward package after securing a record fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title and seventh overall, further strengthening Nigeria’s dominance in women’s basketball on the continent.

Super Falcons’ Cash Rewards Being Processed

Tinubu also disclosed that the Federal Government is concluding the outstanding cash rewards promised to members of the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s senior women’s football team.

The President said the Super Falcons players and officials had already received title documents for their house allocations and National Honours certificates, with only the outstanding cash component still being processed.

He added that the housing and national honours promised to the Super Eagles had already been redeemed.

“We are also concluding the outstanding cash rewards for our Super Falcons.

“The Super Falcons players and officials have already received the title documents to their house allocations and National Honours certificates. Likewise, the promise of houses and national honours I made to Super Eagles players has since been redeemed.”

Tinubu said Nigerian athletes who bring honour to the country deserve more than public praise, stressing that government must demonstrate its appreciation by fulfilling its commitments.

“Our athletes who bring honour to Nigeria deserve more than applause. They deserve a country that keeps its word,” he said.

The President congratulated the athletes and reaffirmed his commitment to rewarding Nigerian sportsmen and women who make the country proud on the international stage.

“My promise to every Nigerian athlete is: make NIGERIA proud, and come back to a grateful nation.

“Congratulations once again, our athletes. Nigeria is proud of you.”
