Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has called on the Federal Government to immediately suspend all military cooperation with the United States following reports of recent US airstrikes linked to security operations in Nigeria. He described the development as dangerous and potentially destabilising for the country.
Gumi warned that foreign military involvement, especially by the United States, could further complicate Nigeria’s already fragile security situation. According to him, external interventions often come with hidden strategic interests that may not align with Nigeria’s long-term peace and stability.

The cleric argued that allowing foreign forces to conduct or influence military operations on Nigerian soil undermines the nation’s sovereignty and weakens local security institutions. He stressed that Nigeria must take full ownership of its internal security challenges rather than relying on external powers.
Gumi also expressed concern that such actions could fuel resentment among local communities and extremist groups, potentially escalating violence instead of containing it. He cautioned that foreign airstrikes could lead to civilian casualties and deepen mistrust between citizens and the government.
He therefore urged the Federal Government to prioritize dialogue, intelligence-driven local operations, and socio-economic interventions to address insecurity. According to him, sustainable peace can only be achieved through homegrown solutions that reflect Nigeria’s realities and respect its sovereignty.
