Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has reaffirmed his commitment to delivering the state’s votes to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the forthcoming election, saying his fear of God prevents him from making promises he does not intend to keep.

Adeleke spoke on Sunday while receiving the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajibola Basiru, who paid him a courtesy visit. The governor described Tinubu as his “dear father” and insisted that his pledge to support the President was genuine.

“I don’t make empty promises. When I said we will deliver Osun State votes to our dear father, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, I mean it 100 per cent,” Adeleke said.

The governor stressed that political engagements should be guided by integrity and urged politicians in Osun to put their differences aside and work together in the interest of the state and the President.

“Politics must be with integrity. We are all from Osun State. Let’s forget our differences and work for the President,” he added.

‘I Have a Fear of God’

Adeleke attributed his commitment to keeping political promises to values instilled in him by his late father, whom he described as a diplomat and labour union politician.

According to the governor, his father taught him and his siblings that commitments must be honoured and that anyone who gives their word should do everything possible to fulfil it.

“I don’t make empty promises; I don’t play games. That’s not me, because I have a fear of God,” Adeleke said.

The governor also recalled his role in political discussions that preceded the emergence of Godswill Akpabio as Senate President and Tajudeen Abbas as Speaker of the House of Representatives.

He said he had assured President Tinubu that lawmakers from Osun State would support the President’s preferred candidates despite indications that some members of his political group were backing former Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari, for the Senate presidency.

Adeleke said he personally engaged lawmakers from Osun and persuaded them to support Akpabio and Abbas. He claimed that the three senators representing the state, alongside members of the House of Representatives, eventually supported the preferred candidates.

The governor said the experience reinforced his belief that political commitments must be honoured once they are made.

Adeleke Calls for Political Unity in Osun

Adeleke further appealed to politicians and residents of Osun State to prioritise the interests of the state above partisan differences.

He maintained that political disagreements should not prevent stakeholders from supporting policies and initiatives that improve the welfare of residents.

The governor called for greater cooperation among political actors, stressing that unity and collective action are necessary for the development of Osun State.
