The Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has expressed concern over the bail conditions imposed on former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, describing the requirements as unusually difficult to meet.

El-Rufai is currently facing legal proceedings initiated by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission over allegations of fraud, abuse of office, and financial misconduct during his tenure as governor of Kaduna State.

The anti-corruption agency arraigned the former governor before the Kaduna High Court on April 13, 2026, on an amended nine-count charge. El-Rufai has consistently denied the allegations against him.

Speaking to journalists after an event, Sanusi said he was troubled by reports that El-Rufai’s bail conditions required both a traditional ruler and a senior government official to stand as sureties.

According to the Emir, such requirements make securing release from custody particularly challenging.

Referring to El-Rufai as a close associate, Sanusi noted that the conditions appeared unusually strict and suggested they posed significant obstacles to the former governor’s release while his case continues in court.

The comments add another dimension to public discussions surrounding the high-profile corruption case, which has attracted national attention because of El-Rufai’s prominent role in Nigerian politics.

Beyond the legal issues surrounding El-Rufai, Sanusi used the opportunity to reflect on broader challenges facing Northern Nigeria.

The former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria argued that while poverty has historically affected the region, northerners traditionally maintained strong cultural values, dignity, and resilience despite economic difficulties.

He expressed concern that contemporary challenges go beyond financial hardship and now include what he described as the erosion of cultural identity and societal values.

According to Sanusi, the region is experiencing a gradual weakening of traditions and social cohesion, which he believes poses a significant threat to its future development.

Sanusi also commented on the changing political influence of the North within Nigeria’s national landscape.

He observed that there was a time when political leaders from the region enjoyed broad national acceptance and were often viewed as consensus figures capable of leading the country.

However, he suggested that this perception has changed considerably in recent years, with northerners no longer enjoying the same level of political influence or distinction they once held.

His remarks are likely to generate debate across political and social circles, particularly as discussions continue about governance, regional development, and national unity ahead of future electoral contests.
