The Deputy Governor said Tinubu met him while he was presenting a paper in New York and subsequently invited him to return to Nigeria and contribute to the development of Lagos State.
According to Hamzat, he has since served the state in different capacities, including as Commissioner for Science and Technology, Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, and currently as Deputy Governor.
He said his experience in government and knowledge of Lagos’ history and politics have given him an understanding of the state and its people.
“I was working in New York in 2005 when President Bola Tinubu, then Governor of Lagos, visited the city. He saw me while I was presenting a paper and invited me back home to join his government,” Hamzat said.
Hamzat also spoke about the political campaign ahead, urging Lagos residents to scrutinise promises made by politicians seeking their votes.
He said different politicians would make campaign promises as the election approaches, but argued that Lagos requires leaders who understand the state’s history, politics and development needs.
“Now we have come to campaign period, different politicians will come to you to canvass for votes, promising heaven and earth,” he said.
Hamzat further claimed that Lagos contributes more than 33 per cent to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), arguing that the state should not be taken for granted. He urged residents to consider the experience and understanding of those seeking to govern the state.
The Deputy Governor also called on Nigerians to continue praying for the country, saying there was a purpose behind the nation’s existence.
