Following the signing of the legislation supporting the establishment of two Federal Universities in Osun and Ekiti States on Thursday in Abuja, President Bola Tinubu gave his approval.

The Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies in Iragbiji, Osun State, and the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences in Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State, are the two new universities, according to a statement released by Tinubu’s spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the president, these specialized institutions were established to meet the public’s educational demands while promoting innovation and research and advancing the nation’s overall economic development.

He claims that these recently established institutions would also act as training grounds for professionals in science, technology, and agriculture, increasing Nigeria’s competitiveness in the international market.

Additionally, the President approved the Federal Government’s acquisition of a Southern Kaduna private university that had been forfeited and its conversion to a federal institution.

There are currently 149 private universities, 63 state universities, and 63 federal institutions in Nigeria. The Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET) was established in Ogoni town of Tai, Rivers State, with the president’s approval on February 3, 2025.
